Keir Starmer strongly criticized Reform and the Conservatives while reaffirming Britain’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Addressing the COP 30 summit in Belem, Brazil, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of achieving net zero emissions to prevent adverse effects on energy costs and national security.

In response to Kemi Badenoch’s pledge to overturn the UK Government’s climate commitments and Nigel Farage’s vow to eliminate net zero targets, the PM highlighted the diminishing consensus on environmental action in the country. He argued that delaying climate initiatives would exacerbate energy security concerns, escalate prices, hinder green job creation, and expose communities to instability and security risks.

Referencing the recent hurricane devastation in the Caribbean caused by Hurricane Melissa, the PM extended solidarity to the affected regions and stressed the urgent need for global cooperation in addressing climate challenges. Meanwhile, Labour defended the PM’s participation at COP, emphasizing the significance of UK leadership in promoting clean energy jobs and opportunities.

Amid growing public concerns about the climate crisis, recent polling by ActionAid UK revealed that a majority of voters fear the implications for future generations. The data showed that while a significant portion of the public believes the government is not doing enough to combat climate change, there is a lack of immediate concern regarding the impact on current employment situations.

Zahra Hdidou, Senior Climate and Resilience Advisor at ActionAid UK, urged policymakers to prioritize carbon emission reductions to secure a sustainable future for upcoming generations. She emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable communities and countries affected by climate change, calling on the UK, as a major historical emitter, to increase funding for mitigation efforts.
