In Belfast city center during the early hours of the morning, a criminal threatened a baby by holding a piece of broken glass to the infant’s head during a carjacking incident. The child was in the back seat of the vehicle with its mother while the father, who was driving, stepped out of the car to make a delivery around 3:50 am.
Two men approached the car on foot, with one entering the driver’s seat and driving off with the woman and child still in the back. Shortly after driving away, the man turned and menaced the baby with what the woman believed to be a broken bottle or glass fragment.
The criminal then demanded the woman to exit the car, and once she and the baby were out, he fled the scene. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered on a nearby residential street, approximately a mile away from where the carjacking occurred.
Authorities labeled the incident as “absolutely shocking” and “extremely distressing,” urging anyone with information or witnesses to come forward. Detective Sergeant McVeagh stated that a delivery driver parked his white Vauxhall Agila in the Donegall Place area, leaving his partner and her baby in the back around 3:50 am.
Describing the events, McVeagh mentioned that two men approached the car, with one driving it away while the other attempted to intervene without success. The criminal then threatened the baby with what seemed to be a broken bottle before instructing the woman to exit the vehicle.
Following the woman’s compliance, the criminal drove towards City Hall and Chichester Street before abandoning the car on Upper Stanfield Street. The victims, although shaken, were fortunately unharmed. Authorities assured that the investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
