Renowned TV presenter Stephen Fry’s friend recently shared insights into Fry’s reaction after disclosing his cocaine use during a life-threatening incident. Fry, aged 68, found himself on the brink of death following an episode of heavy drinking and cocaine consumption.
His close associate, TV personality and comedian Ben Elton, recounted the harrowing experience of rushing Fry to the hospital in a taxi, recognizing the imminent danger he was in. Doctors informed Elton that Fry, known for his sharp intellect, was just moments away from permanent brain damage and death.
Elton vividly described the evening leading up to the crisis, detailing their excessive alcohol intake and Fry’s experimentation with cocaine alongside copious cigarette smoking. Despite his own avoidance of hard drugs, Elton candidly acknowledged Fry’s openness about his drug use in his memoir.
Expressing concern over potential repercussions, Elton admitted feeling anxious about revealing Fry’s cocaine involvement to medical professionals due to the impact it could have on Fry’s reputation and career. However, Fry reassured Elton, despite his compromised state, demonstrating understanding and comfort.
Elton reflected on the gravity of the situation, acknowledging that had he not acted promptly to seek medical help for Fry, the outcome could have been catastrophic. These revelations are part of Elton’s latest book titled “What Have I Done?”
The enduring friendship between Fry and Elton dates back many years, with Fry notably appearing in the acclaimed series “Blackadder,” which Elton co-wrote with Richard Curtis. Fry portrayed significant roles in the series, showcasing their collaborative success.
