The latest craze in the gaming world, known as “friendslop,” is gaining rapid popularity despite its unconventional nature. Games like Peak, RV There Yet?, and Meccha Chameleon have witnessed remarkable success due to their easy-to-grasp gameplay, affordable pricing, and emphasis on chaotic multiplayer interactions.

Described by Langley resident Patrick Thornley as a way to engage in lighthearted cooperative gaming with friends, friendslop games typically involve completing mundane tasks that are made challenging by the playful ineptitude of the players. The genre’s latest addition, Big Walk, combines emergent chaos with a meticulously designed world reminiscent of acclaimed titles such as Myst and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, making it a strong contender for game of the year with its focus on friendship and shared exploration.

The term “friendslop” was coined in 2025 by user @wooosaaaahhhhh, inspired by the cooperative horror game Lethal Company. This new genre is characterized by low to mid-budget titles that offer simple visuals and straightforward gameplay mechanics, contrasting with the high-octane action of games like Call of Duty. Friendfarming, a term associated with friendslop, refers to the act of either expanding one’s circle of friends or enjoying quality time with existing ones.

Many friendslop games incorporate proximity chat features, where the volume of players’ voices diminishes with distance, encouraging close collaboration or the use of in-game communication tools. Unlike traditional games, the focus in friendslop titles is on playful experimentation and camaraderie rather than competitive success, leading to the genre’s surge in popularity with viral hits like Peak and Meccha Chameleon.

Big Walk, developed by Melbourne studio House House, presents a unique gaming experience where players embody cartoonish characters navigating puzzles in an Australian outback-inspired setting. The game promotes teamwork and problem-solving through environmental challenges, offering a meticulously crafted world with intricately designed puzzles that test players’ coordination and communication skills.

In a departure from procedurally generated environments common in friendslop games, Big Walk provides a static landscape that encourages players to explore, interact, and bond with their friends. While the game may lose some novelty after extensive gameplay, its focus on fostering cooperation and shared experiences sets it apart as one of the standout titles of the year.
