Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around family dinners on a small beige mat during sunset. These gatherings featured delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken, fostering a tradition passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore. The act of sitting on the ground to eat emphasized gratitude for our meals and symbolized the unity and cultural heritage we shared as a family.
Over the years, as my siblings and I grew busier with work and school, these family dinners became a rarity, with more than a decade passing since we last sat together on the familiar mat. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner when I was 23, the tradition resurfaced. I introduced my friends, from diverse cultural backgrounds, to this unique dining experience. As we gathered on the worn-out beige mat with plates of Thanksgiving turkey, the essence of togetherness enveloped us.
The evening turned into a beautiful moment of bridging my heritage traditions with Canadian customs. Inspired by this revival, my family decided to bring back the tradition, setting aside time to share stories and meals on the same mat. This act of togetherness served as a reminder of the importance of family bonding amidst the hustle of daily life.
Now, as the sun sets, we continue to prioritize family dinner time, whether on the beige mat or around a dining table. The essence of togetherness remains constant, not just during holidays but throughout the year, echoing the significance of family unity for generations to come.
