As a recent immigrant from the Philippines, the unity displayed by Canadians through hockey struck a chord with her, leading to a newfound curiosity about the sport.

Attending her first live hockey game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Anaheim Ducks, Tan was captivated by the vibrant atmosphere and the camaraderie among fans. This experience marked the beginning of her deepening connection to hockey and its significance in Canadian culture. Embracing the sport’s integration into daily life, from workplace discussions to street names, Tan embarked on a journey of understanding and appreciation for hockey.

Over time, Tan’s passion for hockey grew, symbolizing her integration into Canadian life. Immersed in the hockey culture of Edmonton, she adorned her home with Oilers memorabilia and engaged in game-day rituals. Moving to Vancouver in 2016, Tan’s love for hockey found new life through her partner, Mike, a devoted hockey enthusiast. Together, they bonded over Saturday night hockey traditions, solidifying the sport’s place in their relationship.

Through Mike’s guidance, Tan delved deeper into the intricacies of hockey, learning the terminology and nuances of the game. Despite their differing backgrounds and interests, the couple embraced their diversity, finding joy in sharing their passions.
