A man from Quebec, aged 64, has made history by being the first patient in North America to undergo a liver transplant using advanced technology that could significantly increase the number of available livers for transplantation. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, had been battling liver issues for around 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior to his surgery at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) in Montreal, his doctor revealed that his new liver had been regenerated by a cutting-edge machine.
This innovative technology, known as Liver Assist, enables medical professionals to treat and evaluate a donated liver outside the body before implanting it. For Landry, this meant receiving a liver that might have been deemed too risky for transplantation under normal circumstances.
Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing some of the damage caused by oxygen deprivation while the liver is outside the body.
The technology allows doctors to switch to a blood-based solution to assess how the liver operates under conditions simulating the human body. Hénault highlighted that this technology has the potential to salvage livers that were previously considered unsuitable for transplantation.
CHUM conducts approximately 70 liver transplants annually, and Hénault, in collaboration with Transplant Québec, identified numerous livers that could be salvaged for transplantation using this new technology. The team anticipates that the machine could make an additional 20 to 24 livers available for transplant in its initial year of implementation, with the possibility of further expansion as the technology becomes more prevalent.
Studies have shown that Liver Assist can reduce complications, reoperations, and hospitalization durations for suitable patients. Landry’s post-transplant recovery progress has been promising, with his blood work showing better-than-expected results shortly after the operation, indicating the effectiveness of the machine in his case.
As Landry continues his recovery in Montreal, he looks forward to returning to Gaspésie and reuniting with his family, friends, and horses. He hopes that his journey will inspire discussions about organ donation, emphasizing the importance of having a sufficient supply of donated organs. Landry aptly noted that advanced technology alone is insufficient without available donated organs, likening it to having a horse without a rider.
