Liberal MP Shaun Chen has announced his resignation, citing ongoing health issues resulting from a car accident last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen shared via social media that the accident injuries have led to significant health challenges, hindering his ability to travel to Ottawa as required by his role. After discussing with his family, Chen has decided to step down from his position as a Member of Parliament.

Before his political role, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. In response to Chen’s decision, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s efforts in advocating for youth and fighting against racism. Carney wished Chen a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors, acknowledging Chen’s continued impact in the years ahead.

Chen’s resignation adds to the growing list of MPs leaving their seats this summer. Former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall are among those set to vacate their positions soon. Additionally, Conservative MP Larry Brock will step down in mid-September for a new role in the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to leave his Montreal seat by the end of summer to pursue provincial candidacy with Québec Solidaire this October.

Chen’s resignation is scheduled for the end of this week.
