A man convicted of murdering two Saskatchewan RCMP officers 20 years ago is back in court later this month in Saskatoon over the fate of his truck. Curtis Dagenais, involved in the 2006 incident where officers tried to arrest him in Spiritwood, drove off in his blue GMC 1500, leading to a chase that ended in tragedy.
Dagenais shot and killed Constables Marc Bourdages and Robin Cameron before injuring Constable Michelle Knopp. He was later found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Despite an unsuccessful appeal in 2012, Dagenais continues to contest the forfeiture of his truck, believing the bullet holes in it could support his innocence claim.
The Crown’s application for forfeiture, initially overlooked, resurfaced in 2021, with Dagenais requesting to preserve the truck for potential reexamination. However, Innocence Canada declined to represent him, prompting Justice Daryl Labach to grant a further adjournment for Dagenais to secure legal representation.
The forfeiture hearing is set for August 31, as Dagenais seeks to challenge the destruction of the truck, a pivotal piece of evidence from the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day in 2006.
