The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, strongly denounced the actions of Israeli settlers who besieged a Palestinian American family’s home in the West Bank, labeling it a “horrific act of terror.” Settlers had been gathering near the residence in the village of Qusra since Sunday, harassing the occupants and obstructing their movements despite intervention attempts by the Israeli military.

A group of several men had engaged in provocative behavior, including throwing stones and attempting to breach a stone wall near the house, effectively trapping the family inside without adequate supplies. The family’s owner, Loui Ridi, revealed that the settlers had targeted his residence for months before the situation escalated recently.

In response to the escalating violence, Huckabee stated that Israeli authorities had been requested to remove the individuals responsible for the siege, referring to them as “Israeli terrorists.” The situation prompted condemnation from various parties, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which decried the actions aimed at displacing residents from their homes and land.

Israeli military forces took action to restore order, dismantling illegal outposts and detaining one individual. The area near Qusra, approximately 16 kilometers from Nablus, was declared a closed military zone as tensions persisted. Criticism of the expansion of West Bank settlements, deemed illegal under international law, has intensified, with accusations leveled against the Israeli government for tolerating settler violence.

Recent incidents of violence in Qusra, including an arson attack on a mosque and fatalities on both sides, have underscored the volatility of the region. Settlers’ establishment of unauthorized outposts has drawn international censure, with concerns raised about the impact on the prospects of a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank. The conflicting territorial claims remain a contentious issue, with Palestinians advocating for the return of the West Bank and settlers asserting Israeli sovereignty over the area.
