NASA’s efforts to rescue the Swift Observatory have been abandoned, leading to the telescope’s eventual re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere later this year. Katalyst Space Technologies, in partnership with NASA, revealed that their Link spacecraft, which was dispatched to save the telescope, encountered difficulties in controlling its trajectory, preventing the planned capture and boost of Swift to a higher orbit. Consequently, after over two decades of monitoring cosmic phenomena such as gamma ray bursts and supernovae, Swift is anticipated to meet its demise sometime after October.
In an attempt to salvage the situation, NASA had allocated $30 million to Katalyst to elevate Swift to a safer and more sustainable orbit. However, the telescope experienced a faster decline in altitude than anticipated due to heightened solar activity. The rescue spacecraft encountered issues shortly after its launch in early July, entering an uncontrollable spin. Despite efforts to stabilize its motion, ongoing challenges with orientation and positioning persisted in orbit.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed disappointment over the outcome but emphasized the significance of the rescue mission. As a silver lining, Katalyst plans to continue utilizing the Link spacecraft in close proximity to Swift to showcase its capabilities for potential future rescue endeavors.
Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee acknowledged the ambitious nature of the mission, noting its rapid development within a year. Lee highlighted the valuable lessons learned and milestones achieved throughout the endeavor. Originally launched in 2004, Swift had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to decelerate its descent, currently orbiting at an altitude of 345 kilometers. Katalyst’s aspiration to restore Swift to its original 600-kilometer orbit for extended cosmic observations remains unfulfilled.
The setback in saving Swift has raised concerns about the fate of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which also faces orbital decay due to solar activities. Hubble had been slated for a potential rescue mission following Swift’s operation. However, the status of Hubble’s orbital stability in light of these developments remains uncertain.
