Parts of British Columbia are experiencing severe drought conditions this summer. In response, water use restrictions have been imposed in Bessette Creek to protect salmon populations from low flows. Temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed were initially issued in July, revoked in early August due to wildfire risk, and reinstated later in August. This intervention is necessary due to worsening conditions in various watersheds.
Bob Crandall, treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society in Vancouver Island, mentioned that the streams they care for are progressively drying up each year. To mitigate this, the society conducts fry salvage operations, rescuing fish from drying rivers and relocating them to other water bodies to ensure their survival.
Despite the efforts of communities like Bessette Creek, scientists caution that such interventions have limitations and may not offer a sustainable solution in the long term. Crandall, along with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, collaborates to gather and transport fish, primarily salmon, trout, and char, to areas with more water.
As climate change exacerbates conditions, the task of fry salvage becomes more challenging. The society has been conducting these operations since 1984 and has noted streams drying up further upstream. The process involves using aerators and nets to transport fish, which can be arduous in hot weather conditions.
The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a crucial role in these efforts by assisting in fish relocation and monitoring stream conditions using drones. They emphasize the importance of salmon conservation, investing resources into recovery projects to ensure the sustainability of salmon populations for future generations.
In other regions like France, extreme drought and heat have impacted fish relocation efforts. Jean-Pierre Faure from the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône highlighted the challenges faced due to unprecedented weather events and stressed the need for ecosystem restoration and improved water management practices over short-term interventions.
Faure emphasized that high water temperatures and low river flows pose significant risks to fish populations. Instead of solely focusing on relocation, he advocates for long-term strategies to address the root causes of fish habitat degradation and climate impacts.
