“Canada Allocates $541M for Leading Professors”

Date:

Canada has enlisted 64 professors to spearhead scientific research at various universities nationwide, with substantial financial backing. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly revealed during an address at the University of British Columbia (UBC) that the government is allocating $541 million in research funding for the initial wave of research leaders recruited by Canadian institutions.

These academics are part of the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada and the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders programs, integral components of Ottawa’s Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative, launched with a budget of $1.7 billion in December. The research chairs program was renamed in memory of Eddie Goldenburg, the former chief of staff to ex-prime minister Jean Chrétien. Chrétien highlighted Canada’s debt to Goldenberg for his public service contributions, particularly his investments in nurturing the capabilities of young individuals.

Out of the total funding, $504 million is designated for the initial 64 professors, while the remaining $37 million will be directed towards aiding universities in recruiting an additional 63 “emerging leaders” in the upcoming year. Sylvie Lamoureux, a vice-president at the federal government’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, emphasized that these scholars possess a proven track record of leading extensive and ambitious research endeavors.

According to Joly, a significant portion of the recruited professors, three-quarters to be exact, are being sourced from the United States. This move was driven by the belief in seizing an opportunity and the necessity to compete with other countries launching similar initiatives, such as France and the EU.

Each professor is poised to receive annual research funding of either $500,000 or $1 million for eight years. Joly clarified that this funding is not for personal gain but rather to enable these distinguished academics to assemble a team comprising professors, students, lab coordinators, and other collaborators.

One of the distinguished research chairs appointed under Canada’s initiative is Peter Caravan, who returned to Canada after a successful career in the U.S. Caravan, a Newfoundland native, expressed his pride in being selected as a distinguished Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair, emphasizing his return to his homeland. He acknowledged the attractive nature of the program that drew him back to Canada, emphasizing the country’s commitment to science and evidence-based research.

When asked about the possibility of poaching talent from U.S. Ivy League schools and the potential impact on Canada-U.S. relations, Joly maintained that the U.S. administration is making its decisions, while Canada is pursuing its own course. Amid significant cuts to scientific research and ongoing friction with higher education institutions in the U.S., Canada is welcoming the influx of exceptional professors as part of its ambitious research funding initiative. Joly hinted at a second phase of recruitment for the Eddie Goldenberg chairs, signaling ongoing efforts to bolster Canada’s research landscape.
