The Gwich’in Tribal Council has decided to delay its upcoming annual general assembly originally set for next week. This postponement comes as the council requires additional time to finalize certain financial documents. The assembly, initially planned to commence next Wednesday in Fort McPherson, will have new dates announced in the near future, along with instructions on how to participate.
A recent news release explained that the choice to postpone was made after careful deliberation due to the significant business matters typically addressed during the annual general assembly. Similar financial challenges have been encountered in past council meetings. During the previous year’s assembly, the council had announced the unavailability of audited financial statements, a customary part of such gatherings. This issue was attributed to delays in obtaining financial data from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), a company fully owned by the tribal council. The council referenced “challenges with the GDC” that hindered the completion of its audited statements.
