Miyu Yamashita, a 25-year-old golfer from Japan, had a triumphant debut in Canada by clinching victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. This marked her fourth LPGA Tour win and second win of the year. Yamashita delivered a stellar performance at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, finishing with a 4-under-par 66 in the final round to end at 23 under in the $2.75 million US tournament. She maintained a commanding lead throughout the event, ultimately winning by a nine-stroke margin over her compatriot Yuri Yoshida, who finished at 14 under.
Expressing her joy at the win, Yamashita, through an interpreter, shared, “I’m really happy to win in Canada. A lot of people came out to support me, and I was able to enjoy playing today and throughout the week.” Standing at just four-foot-11, Yamashita had previously secured victories at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan, Women’s British Open, and Maybank Championship in 2025, earning her the title of rookie of the year. Notably, she became the fastest Japanese player to reach four LPGA wins, with her four-day score of 257 in Edmonton equaling the lowest ever recorded on the LPGA Tour.
In the tournament, Vancouver’s Anna Huang finished as the top Canadian, posting a 5-under 65 to conclude at 12 under and tying for fourth place. Meanwhile, Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng carded a 69 to reach 11 under, securing a tied seventh position. Two-time champion Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., finished at 7 under, tied for 13th place. Huang, a 17-year-old, had previously claimed her fourth European Tour victory in early August and made the cut at the CPKC Women’s Open on her third attempt.
Reflecting on her performance, Huang expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to play in front of her home crowd, stating, “To make a cut at any LPGA event is really special, and then to play as well as I did this week at the Canadian Open is just really, really awesome.” Both Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes granted them entry into the LPGA’s FM Championship, commencing at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass.
Nelly Korda, the world No. 1 from the United States, finished 1 under for the tournament after shooting 69 on the final day. Yamashita’s dominant display set an early benchmark that was unmatched by Henderson and the remaining field throughout the competition.
Henderson, a 28-year-old with 14 tour wins, faced challenges navigating the rough terrain and missed several birdie opportunities. Despite this, she remained positive, remarking, “It was a great week overall. I hit the ball really well this week. I feel like I didn’t get everything out of it that maybe I should have.” The event also saw notable performances from Michelle Xing, Savannah Grewal, Clairey Lin, and Maude-Aimee Leblanc, each showcasing their talents on the course.
Looking ahead, the 2027 CPKC Women’s Open is scheduled to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Que., promising another exciting chapter in women’s golf.
