Federal Court Orders Release of Censored WWII Study

Date:

The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden segments from a significant study conducted in September 1986 for a federal inquiry commission on war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recent public ruling, has instructed the government to reveal previously censored parts of the study concerning the resettlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II. B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for the disclosure of more content from the report authored by researcher Alti Rodal.

In February 2024, Library and Archives Canada unveiled additional sections of the report following an information access request from B’nai Brith. However, certain segments, notably those detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the integration of Nazi collaborators in Canada, were still being withheld by Library and Archives.

In his decision, Fothergill dismissed the federal government’s argument claiming that the release of specific additional details could negatively impact Canada’s international relationships.
