In the realm of cryptocurrencies, there are winners and losers. Ben McKenzie, once known for his role as Ryan Atwood in the popular series “The O.C.,” has shifted his focus to what he refers to as “the largest Ponzi scheme in history”: cryptocurrency.

According to McKenzie, the cryptocurrency industry often sees a few insiders making substantial profits while most regular investors end up losing money. His investigative documentary, “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” sheds light on this phenomenon. McKenzie, with an economics background, delved into cryptocurrency after a friend suggested an investment without a clear understanding of how it operates.

In 2022, McKenzie testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.” While some industry figures criticize McKenzie’s documentary for promoting negative narratives about cryptocurrency, he argues for increased regulation to safeguard investors.

In an interview with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe, McKenzie discussed his documentary and highlighted the potential harm cryptocurrency poses to men, emphasizing the allure of immense wealth and the lack of transparency in the industry.

Despite some individuals reporting significant losses in various cryptocurrencies, they continue to invest, primarily driven by the captivating narrative of easy riches. McKenzie points out that cryptocurrency often targets men facing financial challenges, capitalizing on their aspirations for wealth. The documentary explores the psychological aspects that lead these individuals to persist in their belief in cryptocurrency despite setbacks.

McKenzie emphasizes the dangers of unregulated cryptocurrency markets, where manipulation and fraud are prevalent, leading to substantial losses for many investors. He stresses that while criticisms of the traditional financial system are valid, cryptocurrency presents a riskier alternative, exacerbating financial vulnerabilities for individuals.

The documentary challenges the notion that cryptocurrency offers a superior financial system, cautioning investors against the deceptive promises of quick wealth and advocating for greater awareness of the risks associated with investing in unregulated digital currencies.
