In a recent court session, jurors listened to Duane (Keffe D) Davis recount to detectives in a 2008 police interview that his nephew, Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson, was the one who fired the fatal shots that ended the life of rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, who admitted being in the car with Anderson during the incident, is facing allegations of orchestrating the 1996 murder of the 25-year-old hip-hop icon in Las Vegas. Notably, Anderson had passed away ten years prior to the interview.
According to Davis’s account in the interview with the Los Angeles police, the white Cadillac he and Anderson were traveling in, alongside two other individuals, pulled up next to Shakur’s vehicle, where the rapper was accompanied by hip-hop mogul Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis mentioned that had the positioning been different, he would have taken action himself, but as Knight’s vehicle was on the opposite side, he handed his gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined. Subsequently, Anderson, seated in the back, seized the weapon and began firing shots.
During the court proceedings, the jurors attentively followed the audio recording of the interview, with some taking notes. This was the initial instance where Davis openly discussed his involvement in the crime with the authorities. The recorded interview holds crucial importance in the state’s case against the now 63-year-old Davis, with prosecutors emphasizing his own admissions made during police interviews, podcasts, and his co-authored memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
Despite pleading not guilty, Davis’s defense attorney dismissed the prosecution’s account as fictitious and labeled Davis’s statements as unreliable. The detectives initially brought Davis in for questioning regarding the 1997 shooting death of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., although he was later ruled out as a suspect.
In a twist of events, prosecutors argue that Davis breached the confidentiality agreement by disclosing details of the shooting in subsequent interviews and his memoir, hence rendering the earlier agreement void. The motive behind Shakur’s murder, as per the prosecutors, was to avenge an earlier altercation between Shakur’s entourage and Davis’s nephew at the MGM Grand following a Mike Tyson fight.
Even years after his passing, Tupac Shakur continues to be revered as a cultural icon and one of the most significant and versatile rappers of all time. His influence and legacy have only continued to grow, solidifying his status in the music industry and beyond.
