Artificial intelligence has extended its reach by launching a dedicated TV channel on Roku Channel, offering AI-generated content around the clock for free. Despite not being officially announced by Roku, the addition of Fairground AI Creator TV was first reported by Cord Cutters News. However, the reception from viewers seems mixed, with some expressing dissatisfaction with the channel’s content.

Critics like Frank Landymore from Futurism and Bradly Shankar from MobileSyrup have voiced concerns about the quality of the AI-generated programming on Roku. The move comes at a time when AI-generated content is becoming more prevalent, with examples ranging from movies at Tribeca Festival to AI-powered characters from Hasbro.

Fairground AI operates as a FAST (free, ad-supported streaming television) channel, but its availability in Canada is uncertain. Roku’s decision to include the AI channel aligns with the company’s strategy to capitalize on the growing trend of AI-generated content.

Colin Petrie-Norris, CEO of Fairground AI, anticipates a positive evolution for the AI content landscape, drawing parallels to the trajectory of YouTube creators from humble beginnings to mainstream success. Despite skepticism, he remains optimistic about the channel’s potential on various platforms.

Fenwick McKelvey, a professor at Concordia University, sees Roku’s move as a cost-effective strategy to retain viewers’ engagement, emphasizing the diverse reasons people watch TV. While the adoption of AI-generated content raises questions about creative control and economic opportunities for human creators, the industry continues to evolve rapidly.

As debates on AI-generated content persist, regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders are grappling with the implications of AI on artistic expression and economic compensation. The push for more stringent regulations and considerations for artists’ welfare remains a key challenge in the AI-driven entertainment landscape.
