Chad Dupuis, a long-time Alberta Parks employee, shared an intriguing tale of a wildlife encounter in Slave Lake, Alta. As the maintenance supervisor at Carson Pegasus Provincial Park, he spent a busy Sunday preparing campsites for new visitors. Despite the demanding tasks of park maintenance, Chad was in high spirits as the day drew to a close.

Returning to his Winnebago, Chad discovered his dinner plans disrupted. The anticipated steak was missing, triggering a puzzling investigation. Initially suspecting a nearby black bear, Chad realized the absence of a mess ruled out this possibility. Perhaps a human intruder was to blame, but the untouched jar of change contradicted this theory.

Upon noticing a hole in the window screen, Chad deduced that a small animal had infiltrated his living space and pilfered his meal. Reflecting on his numerous encounters with forest wildlife, Chad accepted the loss as a reminder of animals’ dominance in their habitat and the need to respect their presence.

A subsequent growling sound led Chad to discover a pine marten beneath his bed, prompting a brief standoff before the creature retreated. Grateful for the creature’s departure, Chad settled for a humble meal and looked forward to sharing his adventure with colleagues the following day.

Chad’s unexpected dinner escapade serves as a vivid reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters, even for seasoned forest dwellers.
