A woman’s life was forever altered after experiencing a stroke during a vacation with friends, resulting in her waking up with a Thai accent. Cathy Warren, who was in Fethiye, Turkey, to celebrate her birthday, suddenly felt dizzy while heading to dinner and lost mobility in her legs. Initially attributing it to a severe headache from the heat, Cathy later discovered she had suffered a stroke following scans at a local hospital.

Upon regaining consciousness, Cathy found that the left side of her body was paralyzed, and her Hampshire accent had transformed into a Thai accent, a condition known as Foreign Accent Syndrome. Despite undergoing speech therapy, Cathy remains uncertain if her original British accent will ever return, feeling a sense of loss over her changed identity.

After being diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome in March 2025, Cathy spent a month in a Turkish hospital before being deemed fit to fly back to the UK in October 2024. She underwent further hospitalization and rehabilitation in England to relearn walking, progressing from needing multiple aids to eventually walking independently over a span of ten months.

Foreign Accent Syndrome is a rare phenomenon where an individual’s speech adopts a different accent, often perceived as foreign by others. Most cases are linked to strokes or other brain-related injuries or illnesses.
