BT has recently announced a significant update regarding landline services, advising households using this technology to pay attention. The traditional copper cables that have facilitated communication for more than a century are being phased out, with the shutdown expected in less than a year from now, specifically on January 31, 2027.

The transition to new digital services that utilize internet-based calling is imperative, as stated by companies like BT. The outdated copper system is deemed overloaded, unreliable, and inadequate for modern connectivity requirements.

BT has introduced Digital Voice as its latest system, offering enhanced stability, clearer audio, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing. While over three million UK homes have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many others still need to transition.

In a message to Mirror Online, BT emphasized the necessity of acting promptly. Ignoring communications from service providers could result in disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches during this final year of the nationwide upgrade.

The era of copper wires is coming to an end, underscoring the importance of verifying the readiness of landline and home phone systems for the impending change. The process of switching to digital is relatively straightforward, with most BT handsets already compatible with digital landlines. Retaining existing phone numbers and stable billing are assured, without any price increases for going digital. In cases where a simple setup does not suffice, reaching out to the provider or scheduling an engineer visit may be necessary.

BT also urges customers with special needs, such as those reliant on telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly for appropriate support arrangements.

It is crucial for individuals to confirm whether they have completed the switch and ensure their homes are prepared before the retirement of the copper network. BT Group Chief Executive Allison Kirkby highlighted the significance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to guarantee modern, secure, and resilient connectivity that supports homes, businesses, and digital inclusion.

BT’s substantial investment in infrastructure underscores its commitment to enhancing connectivity across the UK, fostering growth and opportunities as more people, businesses, and communities connect to digital networks.
