Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a rut almost four years ago. Encouraged by her brother, she turned to her passion for K-pop and BTS, the popular South Korean boy band, to create BTS Army Toronto. Despite facing personal tragedy with her brother’s passing shortly after founding the fan club, Vann continued to nurture the community, organizing events, giveaways, fundraisers, and promoting local Korean businesses.
The fan club is now eagerly anticipating BTS’s return to Toronto after more than a decade. Vann, along with her son Jordan Vann and a dedicated team of about 10 individuals, has built a strong community through their shared love for the band.
As part of their Arirang World Tour, BTS is set to perform sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium over the weekend. The group, known for hits like “Swim,” “Permission to Dance,” and “Butter,” will entertain around 100,000 fans across two nights.
Toronto serves as the only Canadian stop on BTS’s global tour, showcasing the band’s deep connection with fans worldwide. Vann attributes this strong bond to BTS’s meaningful music, which touches on themes like mental health, self-love, and personal growth.
Before this tour, BTS members completed mandatory military service, leading to a hiatus since 2022. The tour, spanning 88 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries until March 2027, marks a significant milestone for the group and its dedicated followers.
With BTS’s rising popularity in North America, including achievements like their chart-topping English song “Dynamite” in 2020, the K-pop genre continues to expand its influence. Vann, having attended multiple BTS concerts in the U.S., is thrilled to witness the band’s performance in her hometown after previous cancellations due to the pandemic.
Fans like Aira Uy, who had tickets to the 2020 show, view BTS’s Toronto tour as a moment to fulfill their long-awaited concert experience. The City of Toronto has even honored the occasion by temporarily renaming a section of Yonge Street as “BTS Boulevard.”
Excitement for BTS’s arrival is evident at the official merchandise pop-up store, where fans flock daily to grab memorabilia. The anticipation culminates with fans like Nicole Chau, who traveled from Kitchener, securing tickets and eagerly awaiting the upcoming shows.
As BTS’s arrival draws near, Vann’s BTS Army Toronto plans to engage fans through various activities during the Toronto Korean Festival, providing a guide to the city and hosting pre-concert events for attendees to connect and celebrate together.
Looking forward to the unique concert experience at Rogers Stadium, Vann is eager to witness the band’s surprise performances and enjoy the post-concert camaraderie with the BTS community.
