Celine Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week performance series in Paris, set to commence next month, and she has opened up about her battle with an illness and the treatment she has undergone. The renowned Canadian artist shared in an exclusive feature by Harper’s Bazaar that she experienced symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune condition caused intense pain, leading to difficulties in movement, with some days being so severe that she required a high dosage of Valium to manage.
Stiff person syndrome is a progressive disorder that typically worsens over time, affecting only one or two individuals out of every million. Its symptoms may involve muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause or approved treatment for the syndrome, various therapies can help alleviate its effects.
Before being diagnosed, Dion would attribute show cancellations to reasons like a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her suffering. Feeling that something more serious was afoot, she expressed a sense of dishonesty towards her loyal fans, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to seek extensive medical care.
Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all future performances. Although she has not been on stage since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she is determined to make a comeback in September. Her recovery routine reportedly involves a comprehensive regimen comprising medications, physical and vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she invests time in 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice weekly to prepare for her forthcoming shows.
In a poignant account by Harper’s, the singer is depicted as someone constantly on the move, almost fearful of remaining still for too long lest she experiences stiffness again. Dion views her recovery and the prospect of performing once more as nothing short of a miracle, emphasizing the value of her renewed abilities. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the stage, conveying a blend of strength, excitement, and a touch of nervousness about her comeback.
Her Paris residency, which spans from September 12 to May 29 next year, includes a series of 26 concerts. Dion’s journey of perseverance and resilience serves as an inspiration, symbolizing her unwavering dedication to her craft and the unwavering support of her fans.
