Canada’s men’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a notable roster announcement. Led by Canada Basketball general manager Rowan Barrett, the team lineup for the upcoming Americas qualifiers features standout players like Nickeil Alexander-Walker from the Atlanta Hawks and Luguentz Dort, who recently joined the Hawks after a stint with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The squad also includes a mix of talented athletes such as Trae Bell-Haynes, Khem Birch, Marcus Carr, Mfiondu Kabengele, and others.
The team is set to face Panama in Panama City and host Argentina in Quebec City in the upcoming matches. While star players like RJ Barrett from the Toronto Raptors and Bennedict Mathurin from the Los Angeles Clippers will serve as ambassadors, they will not compete in the games.
In a recent statement, Rowan Barrett highlighted the absence of key NBA stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks due to various reasons, including injuries, contract issues, and training camp commitments. Despite some setbacks, Canada Basketball remains optimistic, leveraging a pool of over 50 dedicated athletes to ensure a competitive team roster.
As the team prepares for the qualifiers, the focus is on strategic player selection to blend inside and outside talents, emphasizing experience and toughness. Notably, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, coming off a stellar season, has been named the NBA’s most improved player, showcasing remarkable growth in his performance.
Veteran presence will also be felt with forward Kelly Olynyk, a seasoned player who brings leadership and experience to the team. With the support of players like Olynyk and Dort, who has hometown ties to Montreal, Canada aims to deliver strong performances in the upcoming matches and secure its position for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar.
