The lack of security measures against recurrent deadly assaults sparked outrage among residents. The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti noted that the casualty figures are subject to change.
Kenscoff’s Mayor, Jean Massillon, disclosed that armed assailants launched an attack on the community late Sunday, resulting in the destruction of homes and the tragic loss of lives. This hillside community, with a vantage point over the capital’s access routes, has faced a series of armed gang attacks over the past year, compelling numerous individuals to flee their residences.
Despite efforts by foreign nations to bolster the under-equipped police force, formidable gangs operating under a broad coalition have entrenched their dominance over Port-au-Prince and expanded into neighboring areas. Following the “heinous attack,” Haiti’s government pledged to strengthen security measures. However, local residents demanded the resignation of the police chief, accusing law enforcement of failing to safeguard those who perished just moments away from the police station.
Expressing determination to reclaim authority, the prime minister’s office affirmed on social media that Kenscoff would not be deserted and that the government would swiftly restore order and security in the area.
In the aftermath of the brutal incident, grieving survivors in Kenscoff discovered the bodies of their loved ones strewn on the streets early Monday. Emotions ran high as individuals mourned their losses, with one woman lamenting the death of her son while community members attempted to console her. The chaos and devastation left by the attack prompted poignant scenes of mourning and despair among the residents.
Residents blamed the government for the tragic events, pointing out the shortcomings in law enforcement that allowed such violence to occur. The assailants, reportedly affiliated with Viv Ansanm, a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government last year, targeted various locations, including a church and properties owned by Dr. Jean (Bill) Pape, a renowned doctor running a humanitarian organization in Haiti.
The relentless violence perpetrated by gangs, particularly Viv Ansanm, has gripped approximately 70% of Port-au-Prince, displacing a staggering 1.5 million individuals across Haiti. UN statistics revealed a grim toll, with over 3,100 fatalities and 1,189 injuries reported from January to June, underscoring the dire security situation in the country.
The assault occurred shortly after the U.S. government deported over 160 individuals to Haiti following the termination of temporary protected status (TPS) for some 350,000 Haitians. The deportees included individuals with criminal backgrounds, raising concerns about the impact of such deportations on Haiti’s fragile security environment.
Scheduled to conduct general elections on Dec. 13 for the first time in over a decade, Haiti faces significant challenges in ensuring a safe and stable electoral process amid escalating violence and insecurity in Port-au-Prince and beyond.
