A DHS video displaying the transfer of restrained men onto a deportation flight bound for Haiti has caused uproar, with critics accusing the U.S. of instilling fear within Haitian communities as deportations to the violence-stricken nation escalate.
The footage, shared on the X social media platform, depicts several Black men being escorted up a flight of stairs onto a plane, their hands and feet secured and linked by a chain around their waists.
The accompanying message states, “Haiti TPS has been TERMINATED,” emphasizing that individuals with terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) are in the U.S. illegally and must leave immediately or face deportation.
TPS is a U.S. designation allowing foreign nationals to reside and work in the country without fear of deportation due to hazardous conditions in their home countries.
In a controversial move, the U.S. Supreme Court permitted the Trump administration to proceed with the termination of TPS for Haitians, affecting over 300,000 individuals, despite concerns over rampant gang violence and instability in Haiti.
Criticism of the video came from various sources, including the Florida Democratic Party and Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari, denouncing the action as an egregious policy decision.
Addressing the backlash, a White House spokesperson defended the deportation, citing federal court orders mandating the removal of Haitian individuals from the U.S. and offering complimentary flights to their chosen destination.
Furthermore, experts such as Aaron Reichlin-Melnick from the American Immigration Council highlighted the distress and fear prevalent among Haitian immigrants due to the intensified crackdown. Haiti continues to face significant challenges, including escalating gang violence following the assassination of former president Jovenel Moïse.
The UN reports that around 1.5 million Haitians are internally displaced due to gang-related violence, with a surge in fatalities and injuries documented in recent months. Despite the security concerns, the U.S. plans to heighten deportations to Haiti, transitioning from monthly to weekly flights following the termination of TPS.
