Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the production aims to authentically portray Dolly’s life through her own words and the songs that have defined her experiences.
In a video announcement about the musical’s Broadway arrival, the 80-year-old icon emphasized the authenticity of the narrative, highlighting that it delves into her personal struggles, triumphs, and the path she has forged. The musical is expected to feature a mix of new compositions created specifically for the show and some of Dolly’s iconic hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.”
Scheduled to kick off on December 7 in New York City, the performances are slated to run until November 21, 2027. Parton expressed her excitement, labeling this opportunity as a dream come true, as she nears her seventh decade in the entertainment industry. With a prolific career spanning over 3,000 songs and over 100 million albums sold globally, Parton’s accolades include inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical initially premiered in Nashville last summer at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, where it enjoyed a sold-out six-week run. Director Bartlett Sher, reflecting on the audience’s profound connection with Dolly, praised her ability to inspire and bring joy to people’s lives. The show aims to showcase a side of Parton that goes beyond the glitz and glamour, delving into the depth of her personal journey.
