After taking on the role of Policing Minister, I made a commitment to combat knife crime and enhance the safety of our streets. One year later, I am proud to report that this commitment has been fulfilled.

Significant progress has been made in reducing knife crime and saving lives, thanks to the decisive actions of the Home Office and law enforcement agencies. Tangible results, rather than mere rhetoric, have been the hallmark of this past year.

In regions where the threat of knife robberies was most prevalent, targeted enforcement and preventive measures have led to a substantial decline in such crimes. A specialized group focused on addressing knife robberies, established in seven high-incidence areas, has successfully reduced these crimes by 15% since June 2024. This equates to nearly 2,500 fewer robberies, marking a notable improvement from the previous upward trend.

The success of our County Lines Programme is also noteworthy. These illicit drug networks contribute to knife crime by ensnaring vulnerable youth in criminal activities, and we have dismantled thousands of these networks. Since July 2024, over 3,000 lines have been shut down, resulting in more than 8,200 arrests, including charges against 1,600 line holders, and the seizure of approximately 1,000 knives. These actions have not only disrupted criminal operations but have also positively impacted lives, with over 4,300 vulnerable individuals referred for safeguarding and more than 600 children receiving support through our partnership with Catch22.

The positive outcomes are evident, with a 25% decrease in hospital admissions for stabbings in areas associated with high volumes of Class A drug exports, amounting to 840 fewer victims. Similarly, hospitalizations due to drug misuse have significantly declined, offering hope to families and communities.

This progress is the result of deliberate planning and strategic initiatives. Programs like the knife surrender campaigns have encouraged individuals to relinquish their weapons, resulting in the removal of nearly 60,000 knives from circulation. Our innovative Hex mapping technology identifies localized hotspots of knife crime, enabling law enforcement to implement targeted interventions effectively.

Violence Reduction Units are actively engaging with families and schools to divert young individuals from criminal paths, while over 50 Young Futures Panel initiatives are proactively safeguarding those most at risk. Additionally, legislation such as Ronan’s Law, championed by Pooja Kanda following the tragic loss of her son to a stabbing incident in 2022, has strengthened penalties for offenders and safeguards for victims, sending a resolute message against knife crime.

Stricter age verification measures for online knife sales are closing legal gaps exploited by criminals, and proposals for a licensing scheme are under consideration to restrict access to knives for illicit purposes.

While the battle against knife crime continues, the achievements of the past year demonstrate the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between the government, law enforcement, and communities. Each knife surrendered, each County Line disrupted, and each child safeguarded represents lives saved and futures secured.

The reduction in knife crime from an upward trend to a downward trajectory is a testament to our unwavering commitment to eradicating serious violence from our communities and ensuring a safer future for every young person.
