Reform UK’s recent defeat in a significant Welsh constituency signifies that Nigel Farage’s party can be overcome, asserted Andy Burnham. The Mayor of Greater Manchester emphasized a growing willingness in the country to confront and halt the advancement of the right-wing group. This development followed Labour’s substantial loss in the Caerphilly Senned by-election, a seat the party had held since its inception in 1999.
Despite Reform’s substantial investment and status as favorites, Plaid Cymru secured a crucial victory by garnering 47% of the vote compared to Reform’s 36%.
During a discussion with The Mirror’s Real Britain columnist Ros-Wynne Jones, Burnham remarked, “The positive takeaway from the Caerphilly by-election is that Reform can be defeated. There is a clear readiness to oppose, stop, and challenge them.”
Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram echoed Burnham’s sentiment, stating, “We have the capacity to do much more. We must directly confront Reform. This is not solely the Labour Party’s responsibility. We are also feeling pressure due to the Greens’ increasing influence.”
Burnham expressed satisfaction with Lucy Powell’s victory in the deputy leadership contest, emphasizing the need for a unified approach within the party to effectively combat Reform’s populist right-wing tactics.
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth highlighted the election outcome as evidence that Plaid is now the preferred choice for Wales, offering a positive vision that resonates with the electorate and stands as a viable alternative to the established norms. The result signifies a shift towards new leadership in Wales, with Plaid Cymru leading the charge against billionaire-backed Reform, and offering a more inclusive and promising future for all Welsh citizens.
