A devoted father of four tragically ended his own life due to severe stress and challenges caused by the actions of a local authority, an official inquiry revealed.

Alistair Taylor, aged 34, had been operating a successful barbershop for several years until Blackpool Council abruptly terminated his lease at a nearby market, compelling him to relocate his business.

Following this setback, he was informed by the council that they planned to acquire his family home through a Compulsory Purchase Order to make way for a new educational facility. This news came as a devastating blow to Alistair, who had made significant modifications to the house to cater to the needs of his two disabled children.

During the inquest held at Blackpool Town Hall, it was highlighted that various factors had contributed to the decline in Alistair’s mental well-being. Coroner Alan Wilson emphasized that the loss of his business and residence were significant triggers for his deteriorating mental health, noting that the council had underestimated the potential impact on him and his family.

The inquiry also revealed that Alistair had been adversely affected by online influences in the months leading up to his death, which had strained his marriage further.

Tragically, on October 4 last year, Alistair took his own life by hanging. His father expressed that his son had endured immense stress and hardship at the hands of the local authority in the years leading up to his tragic demise.

Alistair’s family recounted how he was caught off guard when the council acquired the market where his barbershop operated, subsequently terminating his lease without warning. Additionally, they mentioned that a year after losing his lease, he was notified of the impending purchase of his home in 2022 to make room for a new educational campus.

Despite discussions about finding a new residence for the family, Alistair made the irreversible decision to end his life before a resolution could be reached.

His family lamented the lack of support and inadequate compensation offered by the council during the process, which they believed contributed to Alistair’s decline in mental health.

Alistair’s relatives emphasized that the council’s actions had left him feeling intimidated and marginalized. They believed that Alistair should have been treated with respect and provided with necessary support, given the significant disruptions imposed on his life.

As the coroner concluded, the protracted legal process of the compulsory purchase of his home, coupled with the stress it induced, exacerbated Alistair’s mental health struggles, ultimately leading to his tragic death.

In response, Gareth Hancock of Hudgell Solicitors expressed concern over the impact of such events on vulnerable families and urged the council to consider the mental well-being of residents during significant life changes.

Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, acknowledged the tragedy and expressed condolences to Alistair’s family, promising a thorough review of the findings to improve future practices.
