Sky Q, a popular TV device in the UK, has been a household favorite for over a decade due to its ability to store content on its internal hard drive. Despite its longevity, a new contender has emerged in the form of the Manhattan S4-R Freesat 4K TV Recorder, offering a similar experience with the added benefit of no subscription fees.
The Manhattan S4-R operates like Sky Q, utilizing a dish for content delivery and providing storage for recordings. Users can access over 100 TV and radio channels without any additional costs, although premium channels like Sky Sports are not included. The device boasts features such as a full interactive TV guide and the ability to pause live TV.
With a 500GB hard drive, the S4-R can record multiple channels simultaneously, storing approximately 300 hours of content. Larger 1TB and 2TB versions are on the horizon for those needing more storage space. The device also offers functionalities like pausing and rewinding live broadcasts, akin to Sky Q.
Manhattan promises a user-friendly interface on the S4-R, complete with search options and access to a vast library of on-demand content through various apps including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. According to Alex Arbab-Zadeh, Manhattan’s COO, the S4-R enhances recording capabilities by enabling the simultaneous recording of up to four programs, doubling the previous limit.
Described as a compelling alternative to subscription TV services, the Manhattan S4-R provides flexibility, choice, and a cost-effective solution for viewers looking to avoid monthly bills. The device is set to launch this month and will be available from retailers such as Currys, John Lewis, Argos, and Richer Sounds, with prices starting at £219.99 for the 500GB model, increasing to £249.99 for the 1TB version in May, and £279.99 for the 2TB model in June.
