Police authorities in the southern region of Brazil are actively pursuing the whereabouts of a 65-year-old woman’s head following a vicious murder and dismemberment incident.

The victim, Brasília Costa, was allegedly slain by her 66-year-old partner, Ricardo Jardim, in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The investigation unfolded after the discovery of the victim’s torso inside a suitcase at the city’s bus station on August 20. Jardim was apprehended in September, with law enforcement suggesting that the crime occurred on August 9 due to a suspected financial motive involving the misuse of Ms. Costa’s credit cards.

Jardim, identified as an advertising executive, had previously served a 28-year sentence starting in 2018 for the murder of his mother, whose body he concealed in concrete. He regained freedom in 2024 under a semi-open prison arrangement.

Lead investigator Mario Souza remains optimistic about finding the victim’s head, as reported by local media outlet G1. Souza emphasized the ongoing efforts towards locating the missing body part, underscoring the suspect’s uncooperative behavior in providing misleading information that impeded the investigation.

Despite Jardim’s claim of disposing of the victim’s head near the Usina do Gasômetro area, subsequent searches proved fruitless. The Public Defender’s Office representing Jardim has refrained from offering statements outside of formal legal proceedings.

Even if the head remains unrecovered in the immediate future, law enforcement plans to conclude the investigation and formally charge Jardim with the murder, according to G1.

The police disclosed that on August 13, Jardim allegedly discarded portions of the victim’s body in an isolated sector in the East Zone of Porto Alegre, devoid of surveillance cameras.

Later on August 20, Jardim purportedly left a suitcase at the bus station, an area under constant surveillance, before heading to the North Zone, engaging in commercial activities, and lodging at an inn. Surveillance footage identified Jardim removing his mask at the bus station.

The victim’s torso was found by station employees on September 1, while her legs were subsequently located in two separate spots in the city’s South Zone on September 6 and 7.

Forensic reports are in progress for submission to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
