Tropical Storm Melissa is gaining strength as we head into the weekend, with concerns rising about the possibility of it becoming the most powerful hurricane ever seen in Jamaica. The storm originated in the southern Caribbean Sea on October 21 and is now slowly moving towards Jamaica, where it is anticipated to have a significant and potentially devastating impact.

Noted tropical cyclone analyst and hurricane historian Michael Ferragamo took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to alert about the potential dangers posed by Melissa. He cautioned that the storm’s meandering trajectory near or over the island could bring days of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and surges, making it one of the most impactful events for Jamaica in recent years.

Comparing the potential impact of Melissa to the infamous Hurricane Gilbert of 1988, Ferragamo emphasized the severity of the situation. Gilbert, with its formidable winds reaching 115 knots (130 mph), was described as the strongest hurricane on record for Jamaica and caused significant devastation to the country.

Hurricane Gilbert, one of the largest tropical cyclones ever observed in the Atlantic region, made landfall near Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, causing widespread destruction. The storm resulted in 45 confirmed fatalities in Jamaica and a total of 318 deaths across several countries in the region. The catastrophic event led to extensive damage, with a significant number of homes losing their roofs and many people left homeless.

The economic repercussions of Hurricane Gilbert were substantial, with the banana industry suffering massive losses and the country’s economy severely impacted. The damage was estimated to be in the millions, affecting various sectors and leaving a lasting impact on Jamaica.

With Melissa looming as a potential threat, authorities in Jamaica have urged citizens to stay alert and make necessary preparations. The Minister of Health and Wellness, Christopher Tufton, confirmed that public hospitals are ready to enter emergency mode, suspending non-essential procedures to accommodate potential emergencies.

While airports in Jamaica are currently operational, there are expectations that they may close within 24 hours of a hurricane warning being issued, according to Daryl Vaz, the Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport.

In anticipation of the storm’s impact, experts are advising residents in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica to brace for severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, flash floods, power outages, and possible road damage. The potential effects of Melissa are considered to be potentially catastrophic, highlighting the need for preparedness and vigilance in the affected regions.
