Skate Canada made an announcement on Wednesday that Mike Slipchuk will be stepping down from his position as high-performance director after the 2026-27 season, marking the end of his 20-year tenure in the role. Slipchuk joined Skate Canada back in 2006 and during his leadership, Canadian figure skaters achieved remarkable success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
Notably, Canada clinched four Olympic medals under Slipchuk’s guidance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Among these victories, ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, along with the team event skaters, seized gold. Virtue and Moir’s gold medals at the event elevated them to become the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, boasting three gold and two silver medals.
However, Canada has faced challenges in recent Olympic competitions, notably missing out on medals in Beijing in 2022. The country managed to secure only one bronze medal in ice dance through Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier earlier this year in Milan Cortina.
Over the past two decades, Canada has seen several world champions emerge across various disciplines. Noteworthy achievements include Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals. The most recent world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024.
Following his decision to step down, Skate Canada confirmed that Slipchuk will continue to support the organization in an advisory capacity to facilitate the transition to a new high-performance director. Reflecting on his time with Skate Canada, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the high-performance programming and praised the exceptional athletes and coaches he had the privilege to work with. He highlighted the profound impact of witnessing Canadian athletes stand on the podium draped in the national flag with their well-deserved medals.
