A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, caused damage to construction materials earmarked for a public housing project in the area. However, the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) stated that it is premature to determine if this incident will impact the project’s timeline.
The fire ignited near the waterfront of the hamlet on Wednesday evening, prompting an immediate response from the local fire department, as mentioned by Naujaat’s senior administrative officer, Chantal Pelletier.
The NHC clarified that the materials affected by the fire were designated for an eight-unit public housing initiative. According to a spokesperson, the NHC is awaiting the fire chief’s report and collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the damage incurred.
The completion date for the eight-plex is set for June 2027, but the spokesperson emphasized that it is too early to determine the potential impact of the fire on this timeline. Meanwhile, the RCMP spokesperson mentioned in an email that there is no information available regarding the cause of the fire or any ongoing investigation by the authorities.
