Winnipeg Jets’ star goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, who boasts an Olympic gold medal and three Vezina trophies as the NHL’s top goaltender, has officially requested a trade. Speculation about Hellebuyck’s future has been circulating among hockey enthusiasts and journalists for some time. The confirmation of his trade request came through a statement released by his agent on a Thursday afternoon.
In the statement, Hellebuyck mentioned that he had privately asked for a trade from the Jets a few months ago. He expressed his efforts to handle the situation discreetly and respectfully while allowing the organization time to consider its options. As training camp draws near, Hellebuyck felt it was necessary to publicly acknowledge his request, stating that moving on would be the best course for him and his family. He expressed gratitude towards Winnipeg Jets fans for their support throughout his career and hoped for a prompt resolution.
Originally from Michigan, the 33-year-old Hellebuyck achieved a remarkable milestone by being named both the league’s most valuable player and top goalie following the 2024-25 NHL season. During that season, the Jets secured the league’s best record for the first time in franchise history.
Jets’ general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, mentioned in a subsequent statement that there were no updates regarding Hellebuyck’s future with the team. Cheveldayoff acknowledged Hellebuyck’s desire for a change and highlighted his significant contributions to the Jets organization over the years. He emphasized the team’s profound respect for Hellebuyck’s achievements and assured a thoughtful approach to navigating the situation.
Hellebuyck reflected on his draft by the Jets in 2012 and expressed his dedication to proving the team’s decision right since that moment. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump awarded Hellebuyck the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this year for his exceptional performance in the Olympic gold-medal game against Canada at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games, where he made 41 saves on 42 shots. Hellebuyck has also been a Vezina Trophy finalist on five occasions.
