The Ministry of Justice is facing a crisis following the inadvertent release of two prisoners within days of each other from the same facility. Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a registered sex offender, was mistakenly set free from HMP Wandsworth last week, with the police only being notified six days later. Concurrently, William Smith, a fraudster known as Billy, was also released from the same prison due to a mix-up in court records on Monday.

Law enforcement has initiated searches for both individuals. These incidents occurred shortly after another mishap where a paedophile, Hadush Kebatu, was released in error from HMP Chelmsford on October 24.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who also serves as the Justice Secretary, expressed his outrage over Kaddour-Cherif’s release, highlighting systemic issues within the criminal justice system. Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian national, had been in the process of deportation before going missing on October 29.

The police were informed of his release only on Tuesday. Reports revealed that Kaddour-Cherif engaged in inappropriate behavior in a park near his residence shortly after failing to appear in court on burglary charges.

Further details indicated that Kaddour-Cherif had faced legal troubles previously, including incidents of indecent exposure and handling stolen goods. He had been convicted in November 2024 and was under community order and on the sex offenders’ register.

Smith, on the other hand, was released despite being sentenced to 45 months for fraud due to a confusion in court records. An error in the digital system led to the incorrect release of Smith, which authorities attempted to rectify but failed to do so in time.

Surrey Police disclosed that Smith has ties to Woking but could be anywhere in the county. The revelations about Kaddour-Cherif’s release emerged during a parliamentary session where Lammy and the Tory Shadow Defence Secretary exchanged heated remarks over the recent spate of erroneous releases.

Lammy criticized the previous government’s handling of the justice system and vowed to rectify the situation swiftly. An independent investigation was launched following Kebatu’s release to address the underlying issues within the system.

These incidents have sparked criticism from various quarters, with calls for improved oversight and accountability to prevent such errors from reoccurring.
