Canada’s senior women’s flag football team, led by quarterback Sara Parker, secured their fourth world title and earned a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Parker expressed immense pride and gratitude for the team’s hard work that culminated in a 27-20 victory over the United States in Düsseldorf, Germany. She emphasized the significance of this achievement during a visit to CBC Sports headquarters in Toronto, alongside Guillaume Béland from the Canadian national senior men’s team.
Parker, a pivotal figure in the sport at the age of 26, has been instrumental in establishing flag football programs, notably at Champlain College Saint Lambert and Concordia University in Montreal. Reflecting on the future of flag football ahead of its Olympic debut in Los Angeles, Parker highlighted the sport’s potential growth and its impact on aspiring athletes.
Having been named the tournament’s most valuable player for her exceptional performance with 23 touchdown passes, Parker shared her overwhelming happiness post-championship victory. The duo of Parker and Béland, through their remarkable performances, have inspired young athletes to dream big and aspire to Olympic greatness.
Béland, a key player for the Canadian men’s team, played a crucial role in securing Olympic qualification with a bronze-medal win against Mexico. His journey from tackle football to flag football presented challenges but also highlighted the adaptability of skills from one form of the game to another.
Looking ahead, the Canadian players are focused on further development, including attending national team training camps, engaging in international competitions, and promoting flag football globally. With a vision to set a standard for the sport and inspire future generations of athletes, the Canadian flag football teams are determined to leave a lasting impact on the international stage.
