A recent study has revealed that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of succumbing to radiation-related cancers compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. Cosmic radiation originating from space, though minimal at the Earth’s surface, poses increased exposure risks for those operating at high altitudes.
The study, published by JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed national data from over 12 million death certificates to examine cancer mortality rates linked to radiation exposures. The research identified flight attendants as having the highest proportion of deaths from radiation-related cancers, followed by pilots. These occupations exhibited significantly elevated odds of mortality from various radiation-related cancers.
Contrary to cancers not associated with radiation exposure, flight attendants and pilots did not display elevated death rates. This finding suggests that occupational radiation exposure, rather than lifestyle or socioeconomic factors, contributes to the observed excess mortality.
The study challenges the belief that flight crews’ increased risk of skin cancer stems from extended layovers in sunny destinations. The researchers emphasized that cockpit environments, rather than leisure destinations, may be the key exposure sites leading to heightened skin cancer rates among pilots.
Flight attendants were found to have a 50% higher likelihood of dying from radiation-related cancers than the general working population, while pilots had a 36% higher probability. Despite some study limitations, including uncertainties in quantifying individual exposures and potential misclassifications on death certificates, the research underscores the methodological challenges in assessing cosmic radiation, UV-A light, and circadian disruption overlaps.
Moreover, the study highlighted the impact of frequent disruption to the body’s internal clock on cancer risk, which can be exacerbated by jet lag and irregular work schedules. The lack of federal dose limits or monitoring requirements for ionizing radiation exposure among aircrews was also noted.
The report emphasized the need for heightened awareness and management of radiation exposure risks among flight crews. Recommendations included regular skin examinations for high-altitude workers, early or more frequent mammograms for female crew members, and increased vigilance for cancer among medical professionals caring for pilots and flight attendants.
