During her acceptance speech, Swift reflected on her two-decade journey in music videos, where she has been involved in the creation of about 60 music videos, including 18 that she wrote and directed. Grateful to her fans for the continuous support, Swift also clinched the coveted video of the year award for her song “The Fate of Ophelia” from the album “The Life of a Showgirl,” dedicating the honor to the late Dolly Parton.
Additionally, Swift premiered the music video for her latest track, “Patient Zero,” at the award show. Directed by Swift herself, the video features Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, with Johnson and Swift portraying doppelgängers. “Patient Zero” marks Swift’s first single following her marriage to Travis Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, in July at Madison Square Garden.
Hosted by Snoop Dogg, Madonna kicked off the VMAs with her 2026 single “Bring Your Love” alongside Sabrina Carpenter, later winning the best collaboration award for the same song. Madonna humorously accepted the artist of the year award, thanking her fingers for their reliability, and emphasized the equality found on the dance floor.
The event featured various performances, including a tribute to Dolly Parton by Kacey Musgraves, and memorable acts by Raye, Bruno Mars, Shaboozey, and Gunna. The show also saw Sienna Spiro being named the best new artist and a tribute to George Michael by Orville Peck.
Nirvana was honored with the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, accepted by surviving members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Pat Smear, with a tribute to the late Kurt Cobain. Novoselic highlighted the band’s originality and fearlessness, expressing gratitude for the enduring impact of their music.
