Several unidentified bodies with burn marks were discovered on a beach in Trinidad following US military actions against boats in the Caribbean as part of President Trump’s crackdown on ‘narcoterrorists’.
Villagers found one corpse with a charred face and missing limbs, appearing to have been torn apart in an explosion. Another body, found days later on a nearby beach, was unrecognizable with one leg severed.
The situation has captured the attention of Trinidad and Tobago, a Caribbean nation bordering Venezuela, where the US targeted boats departing from the coast. President Donald Trump authorized the strikes on boats leaving Venezuela, alleging they were transporting drugs to the US.
According to Lincoln Baker, a 63-year-old employee of Trinidad’s water and sewage company, the deceased are viewed as casualties of war. Some relatives identified two victims as Chad Johnson and Rishi Samaroo and refuted allegations of their involvement in drug trafficking.
Although many individuals on boats from Colombia and Venezuela have been killed, the US has not provided concrete evidence linking them to drug cartels or narcotics smuggling. Concerns have been raised about the legality of the strikes, including from within Trump’s own Republican Party.
Trump has pledged to disrupt the flow of drugs, like fentanyl, into the US, with some in his administration advocating for aggressive actions against cartel members. While the president has expressed a desire to remove Venezuela’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, there are fears of potential deployment of B-1 bombers near Venezuela after recent strikes on alleged drug traffickers.
Trump stated that Congress would be informed of any ground attacks but emphasized that the US would not declare war. He added, “I don’t think we’re necessarily going to ask for a declaration of war. I think we’re just gonna eliminate people who are bringing drugs into our country. We’re going to eliminate them. They will be deceased.”
In a video shared on social media, Trump showcased the destruction of what he claimed was a “large drug-carrying submarine” heading towards the US on a known drug trafficking route. The President announced on Truth Social that the mission had eliminated two “narcoterrorists.”
He further stated, “US Intelligence confirmed this vessel was loaded with mostly fentanyl and other illegal drugs.” Survivors of the incident have been taken into custody. Colombian President Gustavo Petro mentioned the event on Twitter, noting that the survivor will face legal consequences.
