As Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 almost half a year ago, numerous laptops are now vulnerable to cyber threats and malware due to the lack of essential security updates. While some newer devices can transition to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs that do not meet the system requirements pose a dilemma for users.
Options for users include continuing to use unsupported laptops, purchasing extended updates (ESUs) for a fee, or investing in a new device pre-installed with Windows 11. However, an alternative solution has emerged for older PCs to prolong their lifespan and prevent them from ending up in landfills.
Google has collaborated with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes outdated laptops using ChromeOS Flex software. ChromeOS Flex, a lightweight operating system, can be installed on various older computers, converting them into Chromebook-like devices. Users can access services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the expense of buying a new laptop.
Although Google has previously offered ChromeOS Flex as a free download, the new USB kits simplify the installation process. Users can test the system from the USB drive before proceeding with a full installation. These kits have gained popularity, with high demand causing them to be currently out of stock.
In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers as Windows 10 support ended, potentially rendering them obsolete. To provide an alternative, Google partnered with Back Market to offer a ChromeOS Flex USB Kit, enabling users to modernize their existing PCs or Macs with a fast, secure, and free operating system.”
Priced at approximately £3, the kit includes a reusable USB stick, contributing to the reduction of electronic waste. Despite the high demand, the item is currently unavailable on Back Market’s platform.
Aside from reviving old laptops, Google emphasizes the environmental benefits of ChromeOS Flex. By extending the use of already-manufactured devices, ChromeOS Flex helps reduce electronic waste and lowers carbon emissions associated with producing new laptops. Additionally, ChromeOS consumes 19% less energy on average compared to other similar systems.
For those considering a switch, ChromeOS Flex is compatible with a wide range of devices, providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution.
