A US company has revealed plans for a residential cruise ship that offers permanent living at sea, presenting an opportunity for individuals to extend their cruise experience indefinitely. Villa Vie Residences currently operates the Odyssey, a residential cruise ship that began a continuous global voyage in October 2024. Despite some delays, including a late departure from Belfast, the Odyssey is now following a 15-year itinerary.
The ongoing cruise is designed to circumnavigate the globe multiple times, with each journey lasting approximately three and a half years. As reported by the Express, Villa Vie Residences has introduced Project Lumina, aiming to procure a luxury cruise ship for residents to live on either full-time or part-time. The company suggests that these all-inclusive cruises may offer a more cost-effective living option compared to traditional land-based residences.
Prospective residents interested in a permanent residence on the ship can secure an ocean-view room starting at $539,999 or opt for a suite with a balcony for $899,999. Monthly fees are applicable for residents. Additionally, more affordable alternatives such as five-year ownerships and rental options are available for those not committed to long-term sea living.
Compared to the average cost of a flat in London, which ranges from £530,000 to £610,000, the residential cruise ship presents a potentially more economical choice for prospective residents. Those purchasing rooms on the ship are not obligated to reside in them permanently and have the option to rent them out when not in use, as well as host guests for a fee.
Although specific details about the ship remain confidential, Villa Vie has confirmed that the cruise will offer an “ultra-luxury” experience and will operate alongside their existing Odyssey service. The amenities onboard the current residential cruise ship mirror those found on standard cruise ships, with additional bespoke features for long-term passengers, including gourmet dining, entertainment, a swimming pool, optional excursions, and regular housekeeping.
Residents also enjoy services like a bi-weekly laundry service and medical visits, along with access to a social club and various events to ensure a sense of community during the extended voyage. While the current passengers on the Odyssey primarily consist of retirees, the cruise is also targeting remote workers and digital nomads who seek a flexible work environment. A business center and high-speed WiFi provided by Starlink enable passengers to conduct work remotely.
Chris Cox, the newly-appointed President of Villa Vie, expressed enthusiasm for Project Lumina, emphasizing the demand for authentic residential oceangoing lifestyles across various affordability levels. The company aims to cater to this demand by creating high-value, personalized products that offer both luxury and exclusivity.
