The crisis plaguing the prison system in Britain is attributed to a decade of austerity measures implemented by the Conservative government, according to a former prison officer turned Member of Parliament (MP).
Sally Jameson, who spent five years at HMP & YOI Moorland, voiced her concerns about the recent instances of accidental releases, deeming them unacceptable. She criticized the Conservatives for neglecting the system over the years.
One case highlighted was that of Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a registered sex offender who was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth last week. Additionally, William Smith, a fraudster known as Billy, was also released from the same prison due to a mix-up in court records.
The MP for Doncaster Central acknowledged that rectifying the situation would require time but assured that the Labour party is committed to turning around the state of prisons.
She pointed out the adverse effects of the Tory austerity measures, which led to a surge in violence, self-harm, and drug abuse within prisons. The reduction in the number of frontline prison officers and the loss of 30% of the Justice budget between 2010 and 2015 exacerbated the crisis.
Under the Conservative administration, 860 prisoners were mistakenly released, including violent offenders. The number of accidental releases increased from 81 in 2022/23 to 115 in 2023/24 during the final years of the Conservative government.
The MP highlighted cases such as Joseph McCann, a serial rapist who committed 11 attacks shortly after being wrongly released, and William Fernandez, who raped a 16-year-old after being released while serving a sentence for sexual assault.
Despite the Labour party inheriting a struggling system, they have initiated efforts to address the challenges. Plans to add 20,000 additional prison spaces by the mid-2020s have been delayed, but steps are being taken to prevent future mistaken releases.
The MP emphasized that the prison system has been pushed to its limits due to years of Tory austerity and stressed the importance of ongoing reforms to ensure a functioning and secure prison system.
