Political assaults on judges and attorneys may drive legal professionals away, leading to reduced access to justice for the working class, warned the Attorney General. Richard Hermer criticized the negative environment surrounding justice workers, saying it may prompt many dedicated individuals to rethink their careers.

This statement comes after a controversial speech by Robert Jenrick at the Tory conference, where he symbolically rejected political interference in the legal system. Lord Hermer emphasized that if judges and lawyers resign due to threats and attacks, it could result in trial delays or collapses.

He highlighted the detrimental impact of naming and targeting legal professionals, stating that such actions are driving skilled individuals away from the legal field. This exodus could mean fewer legal experts available to handle cases, potentially resulting in delays and hindrances for those seeking justice, especially affecting the handling of asylum cases.

Recent media commentary led by the Shadow Justice Secretary drew attention to immigration barristers at London’s Garden Court chambers, praising their expertise. Meanwhile, Robert Jenrick has been vocal about his campaign to expose what he deems as activist judges and has singled out several judges for criticism.

Various legal bodies, including the Bar Councils and Law Societies of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, have raised concerns about the increasing hostility towards lawyers. They warned that vilifying legal professionals for simply doing their jobs poses a threat to the judiciary.

Lord Hermer further explained that the political attacks on the judiciary have resulted in violent threats, including death and rape threats, being directed at lawyers and judges, with some even targeting their families. A source from the Labour Party emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing court system challenges, such as delays in justice delivery and the rising backlog of asylum cases, as part of a broader national renewal plan.
