Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with the frustrating issue of online congestion, especially during peak evening hours. This phenomenon occurs when multiple users engage in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video calling simultaneously, causing network slowdowns.

During daytime hours, when fewer people are online, internet speeds remain fast and reliable. However, in the evenings as more households connect to the internet after work, local networks can become overwhelmed, resulting in significant speed reductions.

An analogy often used is comparing broadband to a motorway – the more traffic it handles simultaneously, the slower the overall movement. This explains why many users experience a notable decline in performance between the hours of 7pm and 11pm.

A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK regions most impacted by peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top of the list. According to the research, broadband users in this area witness a decrease in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak periods to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% drop.

Other areas significantly affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).

Not all parts of the UK experience peak-time slowdowns, with some areas even seeing speed boosts during evening hours. Newport emerged as the best-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Broadband Genie highlighted the impact of broadband congestion on user experience, emphasizing the importance of identifying areas where performance is most affected during peak times. Wigan stood out as experiencing the largest speed drop, with speeds plummeting by 55% during the busiest hours.

The report also underscored regional variations across the UK, with Scotland ranking highest overall for improved broadband performance in the evenings. Conversely, the South West region saw an average speed decrease of approximately 15% during peak periods compared to daytime performance.

Experts in the broadband industry suggest various ways for households to enhance their home connection, such as optimizing router placement for better signal quality and routinely rebooting routers to address temporary network issues.
