Labour MP Calvin Bailey, a former Royal Air Force member with over 24 years of service, has criticized what he calls “racist” remarks made by Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin and Conservative MP Robert Jenrick.
Bailey, representing Leyton and Wanstead, emphasized the importance of embracing diversity in society and accused Pochin and Jenrick of betraying their communities with their divisive comments.
Jenrick faced backlash for his comments about lacking diversity during a visit to Handsworth in Birmingham, while Pochin drew criticism for her negative views on advertisements featuring Black and Asian individuals.
Bailey, reflecting on the upcoming Remembrance Sunday, highlighted the significance of honoring veterans who have stood for values like dignity and unity. He stressed the need to build a just society and criticized divisive rhetoric that undermines social cohesion.
Bailey also condemned the recent controversial statements by Pochin and Jenrick, labeling them as racist and expressing disappointment in their failure to appreciate the importance of diversity in shaping British identity.
The MP reiterated the vital role of diversity in British society, citing historical contributions from individuals of various backgrounds, including Commonwealth soldiers and NHS workers.
Bailey concluded by reaffirming his commitment to representing his diverse constituency and advocating for inclusivity, unity, and progress in the face of divisive narratives.
