A newborn baby, born prematurely after the mother’s cocaine use during pregnancy, tragically passed away just a few hours after birth, according to an inquest. The baby arrived at 24 weeks’ gestation, about 16 weeks early, at the mother’s residence in Builth Wells, Pwys, mid Wales. Despite immediate medical assistance, the baby’s condition did not improve, leading to his eventual death at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

During the inquest at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that the mother had tested positive for cocaine use during pregnancy and had limited prenatal engagement. Coroner Rachel Knight stated that the baby’s unexpected arrival prompted emergency services’ swift response, but unfortunately, the baby could not be saved and succumbed to his condition on the same day at the hospital.

The coroner’s conclusion highlighted the mother’s positive cocaine test during pregnancy and her lack of prenatal involvement. Post-mortem examinations indicated that the mother had an amniotic fluid infection, but the exact contribution of these factors to the premature birth and death remains unclear.

The official cause of death was determined as prematurity, with additional factors of amniotic fluid infection and prenatal exposure to cocaine.
