In the aftermath of the recent violence in Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict, disturbing photographs reveal vast areas of sand drenched in blood and numerous bodies strewn about.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, carried out a fatal attack on El Fasher in the Darfur region of Sudan, displacing the Sudanese army from its final stronghold in the area during the recent clash in the two-year civil unrest.
Over 2,000 innocent civilians lost their lives as the army withdrew from El Fasher, leaving a significant number of individuals, including many children, under the control of the paramilitary forces. Aerial assessments conducted by experts from the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale School of Public Health noted the presence of objects resembling human bodies and reddish discoloration on the ground in the city’s Daraja Oula neighborhood.
Satellite images revealed elongated shapes, approximately two meters in length, lying near sand berms and vehicles in El Fasher. The comparison with previous images indicated the emergence of red stains, possibly indicating blood pools, following the violent incident.
Evidence of “door-to-door clearance operations” was observed with vehicles obstructing side streets in the vicinity. Multiple clusters of bodies were found along the city’s perimeter, where witnesses reported civilians being shot while attempting to escape.
Yale researchers described the situation in El Fasher as a deliberate campaign of ethnic cleansing targeting indigenous non-Arab communities through displacement and summary executions. Witnesses, including local militia, condemned the RSF for committing atrocities, primarily affecting women, children, and the elderly.
According to the Sudanese army’s Joint Forces, more than 2,000 civilians were executed within 48 hours, with footage circulating on social media showing RSF fighters celebrating in and around the former army base. Reports indicated instances of violence, including shootings and beatings, by RSF members against fleeing individuals and captives.
Alarming footage depicted RSF fighters using derogatory language towards African tribes in Darfur and engaging in acts of violence. International bodies, including the UN Human Rights Office, received reports of atrocities and summary executions by the RSF.
Following heavy shelling by the RSF, the Sudanese army retreated from El Fasher to protect civilians from further harm, acknowledging the brutality inflicted by the paramilitary group. General Abdel-Fattah Burhan expressed determination to seek justice for the victims and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the atrocities in El Fasher, highlighting systematic killings, torture, and sexual violence.
Reports indicated that RSF fighters ransacked hospitals and medical facilities in El Fasher, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Various organizations denounced the RSF’s actions, describing them as war crimes and calling for international intervention.
